snow still falling across our area. but pretty scenes like these could mean trouble for the

morning drive. quiet virginia neighborhood, a man in his 90s found dead. the mayor's on hand as police begin their investigation. we begin with our breaking news in alexandria, virginia, where a 94-year-old man was found dead inside his house. police are calling that death suspicious. >> jackie bensen joins us live from the scene. >> reporter: the discovery was made just before 7:00 this evening here in the del rey neighborhood. the man had trauma to his body. this is causing great concerns for neighbors. was this a robbery, was this a burglary. police do not have a lot of answers at this point. hours after the 94-year-old man was discovered by his stepson, the home continued to be the scene of a full-blown investigation by alexandria police. >> we have our detectives

canvassing the neighborhood to find out if any of the neighbors saw or heard anything that might be related to this incident. >> reporter: the house near the intersection of russell road and west mount ida avenue sits amongst older homes. alexandria mayor bill ewell responded. >> i have every confidence that the police will get to the bottom of this, and we'll understand what happened and why. and bring this case to a close. >> reporter: despite having a very low crime rate, this neighborhood was the scene of a very high-profile murder a decade ago. the 2003 murder of nancy dunning, the wife of the man who was then sheriff of alexandria. now police investigators expect to remain at this scene all

night and into the morning. reporting live in alexandria, jackie bensen, news4. some people seeing rain, others seeing snow. here's the scene in olney, maryland, right now. a similar scene in silver springs. snowflakes falling making for a tricky commute and what it will mean for our morning drive tomorrow? it looks like it stopped on nebraska avenue. >> it stopped about an hour ago, right at 10:00 is when we saw that stop. you can see behind me a little bit in the way of white snow on the grass. the snow actually melting now as the temperatures still above freezing. this is how it looked earlier. some of those flakes were the biggest i've ever seen, almost two to three inches in diameter. just some huge flakes. this is around the olney area. once again, you can still see

they're dealing with snow on the ground. but as i mentioned, it's mostly out of here. snow along baltimore and eastern shore. the snow did move through rather quickly. many of you down to the east of the state saw rain. up to the north and west it was more snow. this is the map we showed you last night. rain to the south. less than an inch just to the north and west of washington. and about an inch, maybe a little bit more, that's what you saw towards winchester, frederick, damascus, too. tomorrow morning it's not going to be rain or snow, but it can still cause problems tomorrow morning. we'll talk about this, plus mother nature is not through with winter just yet. developing story out in california now, where a couple held hostage by a fugitive ex-cop is now talking about their ordeal. wendy rieger is at the live desk with the news conference that just wrapped up. >> that was a fascinating news conference.

we just heard from the two hostages that christopher dorner surprised in that cabin. he then tied them up. that was the first cabin where he had been hiding yesterday. initial reports said that the hostages were two female housekeepers. they weren't. they were actually the owners of the cabin, karen and jim reynolds who went in to clean it. >> he was in the upstairs part, and that's where the living room is, and one bedroom upstairs. and we had come into the living room and he opened the door and came out at us. >> he yelled, stay calm. >> well, this evening the san bernardino sheriff said he is confident that that body found in that second burned-out cabin is the body of christopher dorner. when asked, the sheriff said s.w.a.t. teams did not set fire to that cabin intentionally yesterday. but that the tear gas they fired through the windows likely

sparked those flames. dorner ended up in that cabin after a wild chase after he left the home of the two hostages we just heard from. he took off in their suv and then car jacked another man, shot at a wildlife officers. that led to that shootout that sheriffs described as a war zone, as hundreds of rounds kept coming. his deputies never give up. two were shot, one has a long recovery head. that department is mourning the death of jeremiah mckay. >> detective mckay is 35 years old. and has been a member of our department for 15 years. he's married and has two children, a 7-year-old daughter and a 4-month-old son. >> dorner, as most americans now know, threatened to wage war on the lapd as revenge for his firing in 2008. the couple, the reynolds that were held hostage, said that dorner told them he didn't have

a problem with them, he just wanted to clear his name. friends and family gathered tonight to remember a baby girl, an infant found dead inside her house. a memorial service was held in silver spring for 7-month-old lorissa yans. police say she was killed by her 14-year-old brother last week in their house in white oak. the baby's mother left the little girl in her brother's care while she worked a night shift. according to court documents, the brother had beaten her and suffocated her when she wouldn't start trying. he's charged with an adult. quick action may have saved a student's life after his roommate might have killed him. he was in college park yesterday when dayvon green set several fires outside. they were meant to force him and another roommate out of the house. >> just had a sense, and he

looked back and saw a gun coming out of his roommate's pocket. and he started to turn to run. i don't think he got very far before he got shot. >> owa's roommate was shot and killed before green turned the gun on himself. owa said he will return to school. green's family told them that he was taking medication for a mental illness. parents in fairfax county talked about their concerns in the wake of the shooting in newtown. they met at the sully district police station to learn more about the security procedures. the head of security talked about campus protection such as cameras, lighting and lockdown procedures. about two dozen parents were there. some of them insisted each school should have at least one resource officer on campus. it's a done deal, american airlines and u.s. airways will merge to create the world's biggest airline. but what does it mean for ticket prices and how about your

dividend miles? jim is at reagan international airport with answers. >> so many questions. this is big. as we've seen with other airline mergers, nothing is going to happen overnight. with a dominant presence, a dominant combined presence already by both airlines here at reagan national, federal regulators may force increased competition here, which could be good news for local travelers. it's expected to take months for this deal to gear up. but for passengers who like to fly out of reagan national, observers say it could bring more options. not only domestically, but to places like latin america and the caribbean. still tonight some seasoned travelers don't necessarily think bigger is better. >> american is -- my experience with it has been rather bad. so i prefer not to try them to stay. >> hopefully it won't increase our prices. >> is that your concern? >> if there's no competition,

yeah. >> we're excited about it. >> reporter: plenty of issues up in the air, especially what kind of wait their time on the job will carry once the deal goes through. >> the biggest concern amongst the employees right now is how they'll merge together. that's the big thing. where are we going to fall in. >> reporter: passengers should expect both airlines to continue to operate separately for months. as for frequent flier mileage programs, those will eventually combine. you'll likely have the balance carry over into a new program. this must first be approved by a u.s. bankruptcy judge, as well as federal regulators. official announcement expected tomorrow morning. jim rosenfield, news4. many d.c. firefighters notably absent from tonight's annual state of the department address. last year firefighters symbolically turned their backs on chief keith ellerbe.

a carnival cruise that's turned into a nightmare for passengers is finally supposed to reach land tomorrow. the ship called the tri uumph i on its way back to mobile, alabama. it will offer $500 to each passenger in addition to a full refund for the crew. and a free future cruise. exclusive video as police chase down an unlicensed cab driver near the national mall. the taxi commission inspector had pulled the cabby over after he picked up a passenger today. they said the driver assaulted her, and then took off with the passenger still in the back seat. there was a chase, and then a crash near 14th and

constitution. inspectors impounded that cab and confiscated the tags. the driver has been charged with assault on a police official. scenes such as that are becoming more common on the streets of d.c. liz crenshaw has more about unlicensed cab drivers and getting into one could put your wallet and possibility your safety at risk. >> right there. >> reporter: this is surveillance video of d.c. taxi inspectors, they're driven to find cab drivers breaking the law. this time they're after illegal drivers posing as legitimate taxicabs. >> he yelled a lot. >> reporter: ross's girlfriend of northeast d.c. called a cab for a ride to a local restaurant. wolf says they were charged $95 for a three-mile ride. >> we were very surprised. as soon as we expressed our astonishment, he started to get angry, aggressive, his voice

raised. >> they can be dangerous. >> reporter: the chairman of the taxicab commission complains about mistreatment and overcharges by the driver. some cases are extremely dangerous including the conviction for assault of a man who raped three women. the commission launched an investigation into a company called capital flier transport and taxi llc. the same company consumer ross wolf complained about. >> he charges exorbitant costs to transport a short distaps. in the four complaints we've had, have used unacceptable language and attitude, and we decided to move, and move quickly on it. >> reporter: the commission set up a sting. it called capitol flier transport and taxi to arrange for a ride. that's when d.c. hack inspectors with the help of metropolitan police set out.

the taxi commission gave us this video of the inspectors closing in on the driver. that's when they issued nearly $3,000 in tickets for everything from driving an unlicensed vehicle to not charging the proper fare, operating without a meter and failing to have insurance. the commission impounded the vehicle and told capitol flier transport and taxi paid the fines. we tried to reach the company for comment several times but no one answered. capitol flier transport and taxi is not the only rogue taxi operating in d.c. steer clear by only getting in cabs with a painted company name. a dome light. an h on the license plate and a working meter. the commission warns if the driver isn't licensed, you're putting yourself and your wallet at risk.

as for capitol flier transport and taxi -- the d.c. taxicab commission warned them that the driver will be arrested the next time he is caught breaking the law. if you fall victim to an unlicensed d.c. cab, report it. you can find the commission's complaint page on nbcwashington.com, search taxi complaints. >> thank you, liz crenshaw. doug's here with more on our weather. not much outside our front door. >> the snow is mostly out of here now. it was coming down pretty good. some of the biggest flakes i've seen quite in some time. over two to three inches over toward the germantown area where they picked up half an inch of snow. coming down pretty good. just like we talked about, half inch to about an inch in some locations. even a couple hundred feet you saw a little more snow. now, radar, all clear. at least in our area. you can still see it up towards

the baltimore region, eastern shar and delmarva and philadelphia. that's where they're still seeing the snow. as we look back over the last six hours, snow line coming ever so close to d.c. it changed over to snow for a brief time at the airport. all of that mess is making its way off to the east. what's left behind it? well, cold temperatures and potential for freezing overnight tonight. that's what we'll be worried about for tomorrow morning. low this morning was 34. nearly .2 of an inch of rain. and some snow. mostly it goes down as a rain day. 36 degrees the current number with winds out of the northwest at 8 miles per hour. bringing in slightly cooler air as we make our way through the night tonight. this is where we are around the freezing mark in winchester, gaithersburg and baltimore. temperatures may rise or fall one or two degrees, but anywhere close to the freezing mark you may see frozen areas on the

roadway, sidewalks. give yourself a little bit of extra time tomorrow. i do not anticipate any kind of late openings or any closures during the day tomorrow. we just didn't see enough snow. the area of low pressure moves out very quickly. in behind it, sun comes back out. we get nice tomorrow. tomorrow's going to be a really nice day. anybody that has snow on the ground tomorrow, it won't be there by 5:00 with the sunshine during the afternoon. now, friday, another little storm system. still a nice day on friday. we'll see more clouds. a little system, just like that. another little snow system moves through. and guess what? maybe another coating to an inch in some locations. we're going to see another one of these things. we've seen about five or six over the last couple of weeks. looks like another one friday night into saturday. everybody is going to get in on the cold side saturday. cool start tomorrow morning. 27 in the coldest areas to about 4
